Summary

Featuring a special introduction written for the audiobook edition and read by the author

Australia has more things that can kill you than anywhere else. Nevertheless, Bill Bryson journeyed to the country and promptly fell in love with it. The people are cheerful, their cities are clean, the beer is cold, and the sun nearly always shines.

A travel book you'll enjoy even if you've been.

Best praise for a travel book is I lived in or visited many of the places in this book and its wonderfully evocative of the country and its people. Nothing extraordinary really happens, but Australia comes across here as most extraordinary. Really well narrated. Sorry it had to end.

Loved it

Awesome book. I have just moved to Australia and listening to this really helped me get into life here. The reader is great, although his impersonations of the Aussie accent could do with some work!

Wonderful and amazing

This is a delightful book full of interesting information and facts, I cannot wait to go and see it myself. Bill Bryson has a way of bringing the subject matter alive as if you are there with him.

It is wonderful

Listening to this in time of lockdown and travel restrictions; Bryson took me on an adventure to the great Australia.
I disagree with other comments that says the narration is awful and that the Australia. Accent is off. He is not trying to do a good accent. It’s like if we were to go to a new country and telling the story to our family and friends and tried our best to mimic the accent - it will never be perfect.
And I also disagree with comments saying that Bryson talking bad about the Aussie. He happens to stumble on a couple of eejits and told the story of it in his own witty way - and isn’t that why Bryson is loved?
Besides, every country has their own eejits and when you travel, won’t you stumble on some??
I enjoyed this book throughout.

Another Bryson Gem.

Excellent listen. Typical Bryson humour.
I laughed out loud many times.
Not sure about the Aussie accent though!

Highly recommended.

I now want to go to Australia!

I was really impressed with Bill Brysons account of Australia and now do genuinely want to pay it a visit...but..would struggle with where to start..it all sounds so amazing.
he does a great job of intertwining history with geology with facts etc. I was hooked from beginning to end.

Bryson at his best again

I never tire of Bill Bryson's travelogues. He is a consummate travel writer and his uncanny ability of noticing everything is a deep understanding and wonder to me. The humour is priceless. The narrator is such a witty and beautiful choice. Loved every page. I was sad when it ended. I now have an idea what mysteries Australia holds when I visit.

humour and interest in abundance

I've read several Bill Bryson books now and they are always a welcome balance of educational and and funny.
it took me a while to get into the audiobpok voice as I knew it wasn't Bill Bryson reading it, but after a while it settled and was inaginately read to bring the story to life.
