Summary
The beautiful planet Pern seemed a paradise to its new colonists - until unimaginable terror turned it into hell. Suddenly, deadly spores were falling like silver threads from the sky, devouring everything - and everyone - in their path. It began to look as if the colony, cut off from Earth and lacking the resources to combat the menace, was doomed.
Then some of the colonists noticed that the small, dragonlike lizards that inhabited their new world were joining the fight against Thread, breathing fire on it and teleporting to safety. If only, they thought, the dragonets were big enough for a human to ride and intelligent enough to work as a team with a rider.
And so they set their most talented geneticist to work to create the creatures Pern so desperately needed - Dragons!

Sadly awful narration.
I love the Pern Books. I know the author is American. But the narrator has a really grating American accent. She ploughs through the book at break neck speed and there is very little to distinguish between sentimental moments and high drama. Sophie Aldred read the first two books she would have been much better. In fact she would have been Ace.

read the book years ago
Read the full book years ago and enjoyed it. This version was ok but unfortunately this needs to be unabridged to be as good

Good story
It was a good story, but was struggling with keeping the characters separated with so many portrayed a lot alike

This is a very abbreviated version of this book.
Good story and well read, but very short for a book of over 400 pages. I was disappointed by this as the Dragons of Pern is one of my favourite series.

abridged and awful!
I have been an Anne McCaffrey fan for 40 years and never ever thought I'd be writing anything negative about her work - but in this production her work, this wonderful story, has been butchered and it is truly awful. It's not just that the narration is rushed and has no depth, no emotion. The story has been abridged so badly that key events and character development have been missed out completely. It is horrendous!

Butched to bits. Don't bother
Dragons Dawn as a book is a fantastic science fiction book by a brilliant author that’s almost 2 inches thick that draws you back time and again to re-read but Dragons Dawn as an audible title is a massive No, no, its been butchered to bits.
From a book that would yield at least 20 to 30 hrs of audio excellence this edition has been butchered to a fraction of the original book, it’s like an abridged version of an abridged version of an abridged version.
With almost 3 hours of poor narration it's not worth the credit or money spent. Narrator Adrienne Barbeau seems to give half the main women creaky old women voices without distinction or characterisations so you can’t tell who is speaking, her simulated accents are absolutely dreadful and unrecognisable. This book has multi nationalities all with different languages and the narrator can’t speak with any credible accent apart from hasty American.
The reading is rushed and some words are mispronounced or run in together and become annoying.
I gave up after chapter five as the narrators voice was grating on me like nails on a chalkboard.
I returned the title a very disappointed reader with no hope of enjoying any Anne McCaffrey book by the same narrator.
