About this listen

Elantris was built on magic, and it thrived. But then the magic began to fade, and Elantris began to rot. Now its shattered citizens face domination by a powerful Imperium. Can a young Princess unite the people of Elantris and lead a rebellion against the imperial zealots?

Brandon Sanderson's debut fantasy showed his skill as a storyteller and an imaginer of baroque magical systems to be fully developed from the start.

A reasonable fantasy novel

On the whole I enjoyed this book, but it was marred a little bit by the narrator, who was good when reading the parts of the characters, but had a rather bored/ uninspiring voice for the rest. The story was quite good but a the characters were a bit one dimensional, not his best work.

Fascinating Fantasy

I was really engrossed in this book. The characters were so compelling. I just wanted to root for them and see them succeed.

He's a Master, but you can tell its his early work

A fascinating fantasy world, and with characters that really draw you in. A good fun read that makes me want to hear a sequel.

Negative points?

The main heroes find it a little too easy to effect change - apparently everyone was just waiting around being dumb until these saviours showed up to teach them more progressive sensibilities.

Also The 'idiot ball' is tossed around a few times, and the reader learns a few things far too much earlier than the characters do. So you can tell that the Author learns a lot between this book and the Mistborn trilogy.

Nevertheless, it's a great book, with great characters in a fun setting. I fully recommend.

How did I finish this?

I found the story a bit weak and the characters lacking any substance. In short boring. Don't know why I put myself through it!

Fantastic!

All I can say is that this is an amazing story by an amazing author.
And it has been wonderfully brought to life by a narrator who is rounded and convincing in his story telling.

wish there were more books in the series

Really enjoyed it, the ending you could see coming but it was still a very enjoyable listen. I will miss the story and really wish there were more books in this series.

some terrible sound editing

Some of the timing was way off - paragraphs had longer gaps between them than some of the chapters! Made for a turbulent read.
