Summary

"I would often wonder about my future husband. A knight? A duke? A stable boy? Of course the last was just a wicked fancy."

Eliza Rose Camperdowne is young and headstrong, but she knows her duty well. As the only daughter of a noble family, she must one day marry a man who is very grand and very rich. But Fate has other plans.

When Eliza becomes a maid of honour, she's drawn into the thrilling, treacherous court of Henry VIII.... Is her glamorous cousin Katherine Howard a friend or a rival? And can a girl choose her own destiny in a world ruled by men?

A good story but shame about editing

I enjoyed the story but the editing was awful leaving prolonged silences. Such a shame as it spoiled the narration and story.

The smooth audio.

I could listen to this narrator talk or read anything for hours, what a lovely and soothing voice she has. The way she captures the emotions on time is perfect and that ‘Henry’ (you’ll know which one of you listen) was phenomenal, it paused me in my tracks for a second, I felt that pain in her cry. Well done Lucy for a another fantastic book

Worth listening to past the first 3 chapters

Initially I thought this was going to be dull. It was actually excellent. Just slow to get to the gripping narrative. Lucy Worsley is as good a story teller as her tv documentaries. I found Imogen Wilde a somewhat unsatisfactory narrator. A fair few mispronunciations, but the momentum built up so well, it ceased to be noticeable after a while. Worth a listen- would make a good tv production.

Brilliant.

The story mixes fact and fiction seamlessly and carries you through the book easily. This could easily be as true a representation of Catherine as all of the others that have been put forward. I loved the prologue. Imogen Wilde's reading of the story was also inspired.

Fascinating and insightful

Although this is fiction, it brings to life the facts of the story of Henry the VIII and Catherine Howard through Eliza's narrative. It's captivating as it put a human and a female lense on what is other wise cold hard facts in an often male historical narrative.

Brilliant book, really enjoyed it

I have been enjoying watching Lucy on TV programmes for a few years now. This is a great book and it is good to hear something positive about Catherine Howwood rather than the usual condemnation. Well worth a read and I look forward to her next book. Let's hope it's not too long in coming
