Summary

In 2018, Captain Louis Rudd, MBE, walked into the history books when he finished a solo, unsupported crossing of Antarctica, pulling a 130kg-sledge laden with his supplies for more than 900 miles. Louis’ skills had been honed in the SAS, on operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, but now - in the most hostile environment on Earth - they would be tested like never before. Alone on the ice, Louis battled through whiteouts, 50-mph gales and temperatures of -30 degrees Celsius. It would take all his mental strength to survive.

In this gripping book, Louis reveals how a thirst for adventure saw him join the Royal Marines at 16 and then pass the SAS selection course at only 22. He describes his first gruelling polar expedition with legendary explorer Lieutenant Colonel Henry Worsley in 2011 and the leadership challenges he faced a few years later when he led a team of Army Reservists across Antarctica. And he takes us with him step by painful step as he pushes himself to the limit, travelling alone on his epic and lonely trek across the continent’s treacherous ice fields and mountains.

With edge-of-the-seat storytelling, Endurance is an awe-inspiring account of courage and resilience by a remarkable man.

Inspirational Read

An amazing achievement from one of the greatest explorers of the modern era. Some people are cut from a different cloth and Mr Rudd is certainly one of those. What an account of what very few will ever achieve, bravo!

Phenomenal - just buy it.

I was hooked on this from the start. Louis Rudd is as interesting as he is likeable... Very! His narration brings this to life. There is no ego either. I've read/listened to so many adventure type books and you always feel there is an element of boasting, but I didn't get that with Endurance. Just a truly authentic and humble insight into another world.

Lacks humility

Ungracious about his opponent and lacks openness , humility and reflection about himself. Thee story is linear, lacking imagination or insights. His opponents' book is a better read.

Oh so nearly!

*spoiler alert*

When Louis cut his earphones I desperately wanted him to bin all technology and get as near to Shackelton and Scott days as possible. I have great admiration for Louis' endeavours yet I am absolutely in awe and biwildered at the way the legends did it in the early 1900s. I feel technology and health+safety are a blessing and a curse. No man shall experience Antartica like the lucky few did in the golden era of polar exploration. fascinating.

If you like adventure books, this is for you!

I bought this book only, because there was a discount, and it turned out to be one of my favourites.
An exceptional story from a great but humble man from his own mouth. No question 5 star book.

Epic

Humble and understated throughout but with expedition details and reflections that bring the whole thing to life. Impressive stuff.
