About this listen
If you want to keep a secret, put it on Facebook!
What would you do if you found out that the man you married had a secret life that culminated in the ultimate betrayal? Yve Gibney tells the real-life story from their love-at-first-sight chance encounter while working as expats in Nigeria to the gradual realization that her husband of 19 years, Maurice Gibney, was actually full of deceit, manipulation, and coercive control and that their marriage had been a lie from the moment they had met.
Rich in investigative detail, she describes how, after viewing the profile picture of a stranger on Facebook, she unearthed a trail of hidden clues to discover a chain of evidence and shocking revelations that led to the discovery of her husband's duplicitous lifestyle and bigamous marriage in Oman. She also outlines her judicial journeys through the family divorce court and eventually the criminal courts for the bigamy verdict. The courtroom dramas are a real roller-coaster ride as she reveals the cruelties and biases implicit in how unjustly and insensitively the justice system treats victims of these types of psychological and physical crimes, to the point where at times, it felt like she was the perpetrator and the bigamist was the victim.
While it may be true that hell has no fury like a woman scorned, Yve Gibney's detective work and determination led to Maurice's downfall and his disgrace and her redemption. Don't get mad; get even. Yve's intriguing story received worldwide media coverage. She made a guest appearance on the Lorraine Kelly Show and was interviewed by Anna Foster on BBC Radio 5 and on ITV National News. Yve recently appeared with Eva and Nick Speakman on the ITV This Morning show in a feature entitled "Dangerous Love", where they described her story "as a case of betrayal that shocked us both to the core".

What a wonderful and clever woman is Yve Gibney
Against all the odds Yve brought this slimy, husband/lover, fiance, one-night stand bigamist to publicly humiliate him. And she did not stop there. As women, we should thank Yve for standing up for the men in some of our lives who are less than they appear.
Yve’s true story, a case of stranger than fiction, is a journey of massive female resilience. I salute you Yve Gibney, you are an inspiration to many.

Incredible and compelling true story
I usually read non-fiction Psychology, so this is not my usual genre. However, I became immersed in this book due to the unbelievable events that unfolded, and the skilled story telling.
The descriptive language, and scene setting transported me to the many locations this story transpired over. I felt as though I was uncovering the web of lies and deceit, whilst the author was.
I found Yve to be a clear victim of psychological abuse. Her unwavering strength in the face of such tribulation, and her incessant fight for justice are truly inspiring.
A harrowing true story, where justice eventually prevails. Must read (or listen)!

Started well but went downhill
Mixed feelings about this story.
The former husband of the author Yves Gibney is a serial cheater and liar and was the son of a serial cheater and liar.
He was open with Yves about his treatment of the mother of his first child - numerous infidelities to the point when she left him for it.
Why Yves ever thought that she could change him is a mystery.
His behaviour towards her was true to form.
After a long marriage they separated & agreed to divorce. Maurice married another woman, when not yet legally divorced, which marriage was therefore bigamous
The author is brave to deal with the undoubted abuse in such a robust & driven way including writing this book.
We only hear the authors side of things of course
I found the style of narration annoyingly strident. It would have been better if someone else not so emotionally involved had narrated it
I stopped listening on occasions because of this & had difficulty finishing the book. There is also a hint of obsession not least in the haranguing of Maurice’s family, to whom I imagine he also lied, which became tedious after a while
The only shame is the fact that Sebastian does not see his father. This is wrong. Why this should be, we only have Yvonne’s side of the story which may not be the full story, but continuing acrimony between the parents will have had a lasting and deeply scarring effect on him.
It is to be hoped that this has been resolved and that hostilities have ceased for the sake of Sebastian and that he now sees his father

Drawn in by listening to the authors voice and the Preface
I’d read the book some time ago and had found it totally absorbing and was amazed at the authors energy and strength to come through such an experience. So after listening to the preface it pulled me in and I decided to listen to her reading it. I also felt that it was a book which makes you think and there’s so much in the book that I thought I wouldn’t tire of it. I was right!
It is well worth listening to her as she describes the shock and pain and all the struggles with the courts and having to support her two sons through what was a horrendous experience. We also learn much about her husband, a text book example of a compulsive liar and his manipulation of his wife in order to maintain his facade. The author was relentless In seeking the truth and through that long journey she demonstrated determination and strength of character.
A very good read, a very interesting book and refreshing to have the writer read it. A book that makes you think!

Such a powerful and inspiring story
A powerful and inspiring book, showing strength and courage throughout this experience and beyond as well as the challenges faced in order to be recognised and heard by those that have continued to ignore and avoid the glaringly obvious. Looking forward to the next book

Like a friend who won't stop raving about their ex
This story is not extraordinary. The story just goes on and on like someone who will not stop going on about their ex. A monologue indeed. Too much detail. And all too familiar a story. The author says it is a story that has to be told. Honestly, it doesn't.
