Summary

Legendary story teller Stephen King goes into the deepest well of his imagination in this spellbinding novel about a seventeen-year-old boy who inherits the keys to a parallel world where good and evil are at war, and the stakes could not be higherfor their world or ours.

Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a hit-and-run accident when he was 10, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. Then, when Charlie is 17, he meets a dog named Radar and his aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from it.

Charlie starts doing jobs for Mr. Bowditch and loses his heart to Radar. Then, when Bowditch dies, he leaves Charlie a cassette tape telling a story no one would believe. What Bowditch knows, and has kept secret all his long life, is that inside the shed is a portal to another world.

King's storytelling in Fairy Tale soars. This is a magnificent and terrifying tale about another world than ours, in which good is pitted against overwhelming evil, and a heroic boy—and his dog—must lead the battle.

Enjoyable from start to finish.

A book of two halves as everyone says. Charlie is very likeable. I thought he was aged about 12 for ages so had a shock to learn he was 17 part way through. Well written and extremely well read. Loved the Rumplestiltskin- like characters. I’m familiar with all the old fairy stories and it was like stepping into one. My favourite Stephen King book and one of my favourite audio books to date.

A master class of story telling

This was a difficult story to get into but worth the effort. So good it is worth a second listen.

masterpiece

narrator pretty good. Story will be enjoyed by many. Only a few will find the real magic within the rhythm of SK's words. You will have more unanswered questions at the end about your own psyche, your own choices and you might wonder, like I do, is this his last novel, a biography of the inner magic world of Stephen King.

Brilliant

There are So many things that are good about book. I absolutely loved it. It had everything a good story needs. It took me into a different world along with Charlie the story this Read brilliantly, hard to press pause. Fantastic story and read brilliantly. Sometimes audiobooks can take away from the story but not this. It was read so well it only added to it. The only criticism I could have is I didn’t want it to end. (Which considering how long it already is , is pretty impressive)

Couldn't stop listening

I didn't expect this story line from Stephen King, but wow, I loved it. The narrator was brilliant, and that also helps. I feel I want to start from the start again.

Absolutely Wonderful!

As a constant reader since the 80's I have to say this is one of my favourite ever SK stories. It is way up there with Talisman, Black House, IT, Mr Mercedes and Eye of the Dragon. I absolutely loved this from start to finish. It made me cry, it made me laugh, it gave me goosebumps, I love it so much I am going to listen to it again, right now....

Fab!

A tale of two halves, first in our world, second in the fairytale world. Enjoyed the first half more as the story telling is true King style. Absolutely wonderful narration.
