A very exciting, varied adventure.
I was provided a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Infected with wanderlust, Braxton takes one final fishing trip with his best friend and who is attacked by a river monster. Braxton saves his friend and, in doing so, discovers the bear's lair and the body of an adventurer complete with maps and a curious amulet.
From here starts a journey that takes the self-conscious, small town boy to his first city and then onwards, across 4 books, to becoming a major power in the realm(s).
This series has it all, interesting and likeable characters (I absolutely loved Nixy), villains and overlords and more than a few world-ending threats.
Battles are well written, be them small-scale or (as happens often) all out wars and the relationship between the protagonist and the other players is well handled, colourful and (thankfully) not full of teeny-angst as many books of this ilk do.
My only small(ish) criticism is the early narration. The narrator you see has a Capital F) Fantastic voice, one full of power and heroism and it suits Braxton perfectly, but only from book 2 onwards in my opinion.
Having him arrive at the first city he's ever seen and being a bumbling farmboy with a heroes voice is very jarring. As he grows in confidence and power though the voice soon matches him better and this (minor niggle) is a thing of the past.
Sadly the hawk-shriek that plays between chapters remains a constant issue and is very piercing meaning, if I listened for a few hours via headphones, I would eventually have to reduce volume to avoid a headache.
Aside from these two very small 'issues' I really enjoyed this series. It is extremely exciting with a wide range of adventures, very varied races and creatures and well fleshed out characters.
