Editor reviews

Actor Julie Christie performs Thomas Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd, which tells the story of a young shepherd named Gabriel and the trials and tribulations he encounters over the course of a long attempt to woo a woman named Bathsheba, whose legion of admirers seems continuously to grow.

Christie has a strong sense of comedic and dramatic timing and she pays careful attention to pacing, constantly recalibrating her performance to match the exact emotional intensity of any given scene. Her voice, too, is a pleasure to hear, clear and authoritative, effectively softening Hardy’s old-fashioned literary style for a modern audience.
