Summary

Die Hauptfigur, ein gebildeter junger Mann, kommt auf dem Land den ansässigen Gutsbesitzern in Kontakt. Er wundert sich darüber, womit dieser Gesellschaftskreis seine Zeit verbringt und liest vor versammelter Mannschaft einen Ausschnitt aus Goethes Faust vor. Das Echo ist geteilt, die Wirkung auf eine junge Frau jedoch unmittelbar. Die Gedanken Goethes scheinen das junge Fräulein hoffnungslos zu überfordern und natürlich hat sie Fragen, aber ihre Verwirrung wird durch Gespräche mit dem Protagonisten nur noch größer. Sie schafft es nicht, ihre neuen Gedanken einzuordnen und die unbekannten Horizonte erweisen sich als mit großen Gefahren gespicktes Unbetretenes Neuland, dass nicht von jedermann unbeschadet betreten werden kann.
