Summary

No one claimed the fickle Fates were fair.

While Rome once again prepares for war, Gaius Fabius Rufus confronts treachery and tragedy at home. With his future uncertain and his spirit shattered, Gaius chases the only dream he has left: the imperial throne. When a ghost’s secrets expose a dreadful mistake, will the Lion of the Lucky Fourth give up his destiny and embrace the forbidden love of a vanquished barbarian?

Abandoned and angry, Prince Allerix struggles to find purpose and honor in defeat. With fierce determination and his mother’s gift of magic, Alle crafts a new plan to exact vengeance and earn his Dacian kinsmen’s respect at last. When he must choose between revenge and saving the love of his life, can Allerix ignore his sacred oath and escape to happiness?

Fortuna alone can guide these two former enemies back into each other’s arms and hearts, but only if Gaius and Allerix are willing to sacrifice immortality and disappear from history.

Favorites of Fortuna is the final book in the Dominus saga.

A thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the series!

The conclusion of this amazing story arc over 4 books was everything I hoped for. Gaius and Allerix must find their way back to each other after their separation at the end of book 3, and their reunion is magical in every sense of the word. Since they finally understand the depth of their true feelings for each other, their main obstacle becomes how to manage to be together in the same geographical location while staying alive amidst war and political machinations. All of the major characters from the series appear, and the subplots are resolved with great satisfaction. It's a kinder, gentler Gaius we encounter, and some of the most tender scenes in the series between the couple are featured here in the nearly 18 hours of audio expertly narrated by Hannibal Hills and Nick J Russo. This series has been a wonderful ride, and I am so very glad I signed up for it.

Hard won HEA

I've really enjoyed the three previous books in this series, but I struggled with the final book. Part of this was because of the bombastic narration by Hannibal Hills that this time grated on my nerves. The other reason was the content. The previous books have had a lot of sex scenes, along with intrigue, machinations, love and loss. They were all well-balanced. I know the author is a historian and loves her subject but this novel was bogged down with a third of the story covering the Roman military strategy of Trajan's army moving across North Africa and Gaius's part in it. It came across as a little self indulgent. Our lovers are separated for two thirds of this book which covers TEN years and there are few secret trysts along the way.
I found it a bit of a slog.
I'm glad that some of the threads running through all four books were tied and it was a sweet HEA.
It was quite a journey to get there.
