Summary

An inspiring insight into one of the oldest extreme sports, this is the definitive story of fell-running. This is a complete portrait of one of the few sports to have remained utterly true to its roots. Richard Askwith’s journey takes him into a world of forbidding rockscapes, horizontal rain, fear, exhaustion and stunning natural beauty, as well as his own attempt at one of the toughest challenges imaginable: the Bob Graham Round, the sport’s traditional test of 42 Lake District peaks in 24 hours.

Gripping, funny and moving, this is a story that any aspiring runner, endurance athlete or mountain-lover will understand well: of extremity, heroism and the experience of a lifetime.

Beautiful

A beautiful journey through a history of fell running and the remote hills of the Lake District.
Meeting some of the key characters from a sport that is more about the experience of the individual than it is about the sport itself.
If you have or haven’t ran through the Lake District fells this book will take you there or take you back.
At first I thought the overly detailed reliving of various races was a little ott, but I quickly came to want more and more detail. Meet more characters and visit more hills.
This is a book that you cannot follow with another ‘like it’ because there are none.
(Note: my review might be coloured by my love of the Lake District and fell running!)

Superb

Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Fascinating and incredibly well researched insight into fell running and the community it breeds. Finished the last few chapters lied in the Greek sun which somehow didn’t feel quite right considering the nature of the book. Brilliant read and narration equally so.

Bringing the emotional draw of the fells to paper

A wonderful, encyclopedic history of fell and mountain running. Hard not to fantasize about upping sticks and moving to a stone cottage in the Cumbrian Fells!

Dry humour and evocative descriptions

A great description of a wonderfully British niche of sport based in the grounded north of our country.

A Pure Delight

It's lovely to find a running book written with such humility. Whilst you could be drawn in to thinking it's one mans struggle against adversity, it's more a book of his hero worship of the fell running community. Well written, well read and a pure delight.

Well done Richard for the book and your (self) understated achievement.

A fantastic insight

I came across this book after listening to ‘Race Against Time’. The book gives a balanced rich account of the history of fell running and Richard’s narration is easy on the ear and encapsulating. The book is inspiring and educational and I particularly enjoyed the last chapter where he revisited the scene a decade or so later. It has left me with a desire to complete a BG. Maybe not in 24hrs but at my more leisurely pace.

Inspirational

Really enjoyable book. Could not stop listening and I just feel like I need to get back to the Lake District.....not to fell run but to hike the same mountain and fells.

For the times you can't get to the fells.

I've read the book twice but still loved listening to audiobook whilst dreaming of the next day on the fells. Always inspires for the next race.
