About this listen

READ BY THE AUTHOR

'Get your daughters to read this, but only after your partners and sons have finished it’
Jo Brand

'An astute and persuasive page-turner' Observer

'Powerful’ Sunday Times
_____________________________________________________

Too often, we blame women. For walking home alone at night. For not demanding a seat at the table. For not overcoming the odds that are stacked against them.

This distracts us from the real problem: the failings and biases of a society that was not built for women. In this explosive book, feminist writer and activist Laura Bates exposes the systemic prejudice at the heart of five of our key institutions.

Education
Politics
Media
Policing
Criminal justice

Combining stories with shocking evidence, Fix the System, Not the Women is a blazing examination of sexual injustice and a rallying cry for reform.

Critic reviews

‘Entertaining and informative. Its perfectly intelligent advice is in dire need of being put into practice. Get your daughters to read this, but only after your partners and sons have finished it’
(Jo Brand)
‘An urgent and important book. I read it with rage and anger at the injustices and inequalities, at how women are shamed and how they internalise this shame, and how they are held responsible for creating change rather than holding the systems and societal structures accountable for their oppression. But in the end, I read this with great optimism and hope. Because if we need to change this world, for us, and for our daughters, we have to fix the system. And this book is a blistering manifesto for this change' (Dr Pragya Agarwal)
'I am in awe of Laura Bates and her ability to perfectly balance facts and her personal experiences, opinions and emotions. Her writing is nothing short of perfect' (Sofie Hagen, author of Happy Fat)
'I inhaled this. It is INCREDIBLE. Absolute perfection' (Joeli Brearley, founder of Pregnant Then Screwed)

Another Outstanding Book

Everyone needs to read this book. Like all her books they are an eye opener of the systemic abuse of women in the UK and across the world. There are no isolated incidents. Years and years of misogyny is the problem.
I found it very upsetting and distressing but also full of hope too. Thank you Laura ❤️

A difficult but essential read

I couldn't put this book down! A difficult but essential read filled with unbelievable (or sadly not so unbelievable) stories and statistics that should convince anyone that there's a need to talk about the systems in which we live and work to change them.

Brilliant, clear stated. How much longer can this situation continue?

This book should be required reading for everyone in the UK.
We have a huge problem in our society, one that is just being swept under an enormous carpet, but people like Laura Bates are brave enough to name the problem, and shame the people who allow it to continue.
This book points to exactly where the problem is and what we, as a society, can do about it. Highly recommended.

Stirring manifesto

A stirring manifesto from the founder of the Everyday Sexism project. She peppers her arguments with stats and quotes widely drawn, plus deeply moving stories from the project. It's a bonus to have it narrated so well by the author.

Harrowing and Brilliant

Literally everyone should read his book - especially every guy. The truth about what it's really like to be a woman in this world is shamefully hidden from us from day one, and it's eye opening once you finally hear it

Every woman's inner voice

Laura Bates has written a well researched, honest book that echoed so many of my own inner thoughts and, I imagine, many womens. It's difficult to know how to advocate for women when you are only one person but you can start by just being a little kinder to every woman you encounter and really listening when they are talking. This book has opened my eyes to the systemic misogyny women are subjected to and highlighted the need for real change.

An important listen/read

This gets uncomfortable - in terms of - yes, I have felt this, I have had this done to me etc. The data is alarming but deep down I knew these statistics. This exposes the system and has made me feel empowered. I hope it brings up a younger generation of men and women to break this system but also hope it challenges those who can start to make change now.
