Summary

"The encounter was so sudden it took my breath away, and for a single moment I stood frozen, staring into the grizzly's eyes. It was so close I could reach out and touch its shaggy bronze fur."

Dolly Faulkner has many heart-stopping moments of terror and anxiety, living much of the time truly alone in the Alaskan wilderness. But she is not lonely, as the awesome space and beauty of the mountains fill her with appreciation of all things of nature.

Dolly Faulkner came to Alaska as a young woman with the dream of living in the wilderness. Forty Years in the Wilderness is a true reality of carving out a homestead in the Kilbuck Mountains near a minor hotsprings that the regional Native corporation is now trying to claim. She is now a senior citizen, still living in the wilderness after the death of her husband. Her struggles and adventures continue, so she has many more stories to tell.

Amazing story. Awesome woman!

That is what you call - living with the nature and environment! No greenwashing Netflix propaganda here. Her husband was not right in his head, terrible bully, and psychopath. Alaska is beautiful but it’s not heaven, unless you are rich.

what a strong and brave woman.

I loved listening to Dolly's story. Surviving such a harsh environment, so much heartache and living so lonely and isolated for so much of her life. Coping with so many life changing events. such a strong and brave woman.

Amazing Story of Female Endurance

Dolly and her daughter Gillian show the amazing resilience and ingenuity of women fighting to survive on an Alaskan homestead. Despite having a selfish, abusive, negligent husband, she kept both his (3) children and her own (2) safe and healthy in a unforgiving landscape. Amazing story (I just wish she had left her horrible husband.)

Best book I've listened to in a long time!

I listen to about 4 books a month and can not remember enjoying another book more than this one. Amazing story, and I so hope this family get the justice they deserve.

Raw account of wilderness living

Fantastic insight to Alaskan Wilderness living and the harsh reality of survival, family challenges and the heroic women Dolly and Gillian who are the backbone of this family. I have always been fascinated by off grid living, it was wonderful to explore this through the eyes of Dolly. I would thoroughly recommend this book

family against the odds

The story of a family that despite the odds were successful building a life for themselves by working hard, for 40 years only to have a corporation try and take it off them. It would be great to know the latest.
