Summary
Biomedical ethicist Arthur Caplan, Ph. D. on this edition of Fresh Air. Host Terry Gross and Caplan will discuss human embryos that are being grown by researchers doing stem cell research. Previously, the cells were harvested from aborted fetuses. The idea of fetal farming is quite controversial. Proponents cite the enormous potential for finding cures to cancer, Alzheimer's and diabetes. Opponents are aghast at the notion of using and destroying human life for the sole purpose of research. Caplan is the Director of the Center for Bioethics and Trustee Professor of Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a Professor of Molecular and Cellular Engineering and Professor of Philosophy. Caplan has written seven books on bioethical topics, including Ethics and Organ Transplants and Am I My Brother's Keeper? The Ethical Frontiers of Biomedicine. He's consulted for numerous government offices and is a frequent commentator in the national media. (Broadcast Date: July 17, 2001)
