feel good vibe.
A charming historical story based in Alabama: it relects the essence of kindness in it's female protaganists and evokes the feeling of the small community pulled together through the Whistlestop cafe. The underlying thread throughout the narrative is of a loving family, and a community of women whose lives have been impacted by the societal expectations and male dominance at that time. As the story develops so do the characters: they find themselves and challenge the norms. It is a poignant and evocative story.

Delightful
The narration was perfect for the story! The story was sweet and a little predictable in the most comforting way.

Lovely ole Southern Charm
I was looking for something easy to listen to, I saw this & remembered liking the film in the early 90's.
This is much better than the film. I was enchanted by the author's performance, the accents, the characters & the descriptions.
In a nutshell:
A white, elderly woman's recollections
of living in segregated Alabama in the 1930's empowers another woman in the 1980's to address her troubles.
But it is so much more than this.
I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book.

I really struggled with the accent
It was really hard for me following the story narrated with the southern accent. It's a feel-good book about unusual friendship between two women and self-discovery.

A wonderful book...but too short
The narrator/author does a really good job of bringing the story to life which leaves you needing and wanting more! If I had not watched the film I would have found it hard keeping up with the swift date changes and the brief stories. I didn't realise that this was the abridged version and don't really understand why such a wonderful story would be cut down. All the same it was a lovely book, but I will be getting the real thing to read properly and get the full story.

Too short
This is such a wonderful story but was far too short and over to soon. I would have preferred the unabridged version. Now I need to find the book so I read it in full.
