About this listen
In the summer of 1992, Jason Salkey was cast in a role that would change his life forever. Sharpe’s Rifles, a Napoleonic war drama, was to be shot in the Crimean Peninsula. Little did the producers know that they would be sending Jason and the crew to film in a rapidly disintegrating Soviet Union. There they faced near-starvation and danger round every corner as they set about creating one of Britain’s most successful and critically acclaimed television programs.
From Crimea with Love documents the mishaps, blunders, incompetence and downright corruption that made Sharpe’s Rifles go down in British television folklore for its unique tales of hardship. Follow the cast through intense depravation and constant catastrophe until they become every bit the jaded, battle-hardened soldiers we saw on screen. Jason brings you an eye-opening, jaw-dropping insider’s account of one of the best-loved shows ever made.

Brilliant!
Ever since I was a child I loved Sharpe and would rush home to watch it when it was aired. Many years later having watched the series and read the books many times I was excited to see the book by Jason. He has a great voice for being a narrator and I enjoyed listening immensely. It was fascinating to hear of the adventures during filming, the locations and great collaboration of actors. Would highly recommend it to others.

Good fun
Good fun & some interesting anecdotes. However, the grievances and the divulgence of more salacious stories started to sound very ‘Alan Partridge’ to me. The mention of the tv producers ‘eyebrow twitch’ cracked me up and incredibly partridgian bitterness about it.

Excellent and Honest
Such a good insiders view of Behind the Scenes of the Sharpe series that we all know and love. Jason's honest, straightforward account makes you feel like you are in the middle of the Crimea with them and his way if narrating is natural and a joy to listen to.
Highly recommended for any fan of the series

A must-listen for any fan of Sharpe
Jason Salkey has written and narrated a really engaging account of life in the Crimea (and beyond) filming five series of Sharpe, based on his diaries from the time.
While life as an actor on the Sharpe set may not have been QUITE as bad as life as a rifleman in the Peninsular Wars, it's abundantly clear that the cast put up with some pretty awful conditions at times, which Jason relates with gusto.
Lots of behind the scenes insights on how the onscreen magic is created, and on the frequent conflicts with the production head honchos.
A really interesting listen, engagingly narrated by Jason. Sharpe has clearly been a big part of his life - and his diaries capture why it was so special.
I commend it to anyone who enjoyed the TV series!

A fantastic behind the scenes telling of the filming of Sharpe.
This book gives you a great sense of the blood sweat and tears that went into the making of Sharpe. I particularly liked the historical political context that grounded this telling. Long live the heroes of Dimerji!
