When Theresa May called a snap election in 2017, Labour was more than 20 points behind in the polls, and it seemed the only question was how big her landslide would be. The experts argued campaigns don’t move opinions much and young voters would not turn out. But Jeremy Corbyn and his team had other ideas. They knew people were angry about austerity and were confident they would support a manifesto for the many, not the few.
In the most dramatic election of modern times, Corbyn’s inspirational campaign transformed British politics. Labour won its best vote for 20 years and the largest increase in its vote share since 1945. Far from winning a landslide, the Tories were left without a majority and forced to abandon many of their unpopular plans.
Steve Howell was at the centre of Corbyn’s election machine. A member of the Labour leader’s strategy group, he was involved in all the key campaign decisions. From the outset, he believed that Corbyn’s campaigning skills, enthusiastic army of supporters and hopeful message could produce a surge in support. A bold title for a period that did not transform.
A Labour Party that came a poor second to an even poorer government could not be described as transformative. Given the nature of this book it’s a shame that the chosen narrator struggled to pronounce words like “poll” and “polling”, let alone Laura Kuenssberg and the the Derby manager Brian “Clow”.

Insightful and gripping
If you want to understand the UK Labour Party and how it keeps bucking commentators predictions of its demise you must listen to this. It's gripping, full of context and details. If you liked Alex Nunns' The Candidate you will love this.

Entertaining behind the scenes political drama.
The story is pacy and well written. Unlike some other accounts it appears honest, with the author willing to admit campaign or personal mistakes.
My main criticism is in the narration. The performer repeatedly mispronounces people and place names. He should now how to correctly say Brian Clough or Laura Kuenssberg
