About this listen

What will World War III look like?

Ghost Fleet is a gripping imagining of a war set in the not too distant future.

Navy captains battle through a modern-day Pearl Harbor, fighter pilots duel with stealthy drones, teenage hackers fight in digital playgrounds, Silicon Valley billionaires mobilise for cyber war and a serial killer carries out her own vendetta.

Ultimately, victory will depend on who can best blend the lessons of the past with the weapons of the future.

Well narrated fun and inciteful.

There are some good technical plot lines in this book, which may not be the best written, but is very well narrated.

I'm guessing this is set at least 20 years from when it was penned (2015) and there are a few inconsistencies in terms of equipment (the US, Chinese and Russian guns and aircraft appear stuck in 2015), but the general concept is sound and it's a memorable picture that is painted.

Credible, engaging and interesting.

Good character development, believable story, fair pace - I liked this book. It only deals with the war at sea and has very little submarine action which surprised me, but is nevertheless a good listen. The narrator copes well with voices and his pace matches the action. Recommended.

Entertaining and worth a go

Tough book to review but asthe headline said it's a solid 4 star book - entertaining and worth a go if you like this type of book.

The story is set in the near future where China has gone to war with America. I bought into the political set ups and how the events panned out. I also bought into the depth of knowledge on the respective militaries as well as the advances in technology - all extremely well researched and entirely plausible.

Where the book falls down for me is lack of depth to the characters that we follow. I'm not American so wasn't exactly rooting for the American characters through blind patriotism and aside from a few glimpses of personality there weren't any characters I particularly wanted to succeed - so when the story ended I wasn't left wanting more.

Technobabble and forgettable characters

An insightful vision of future tech but little more. You will be hard-pressed to remember the characters' names and will care little for their circumstances. Too many are introduced and then killed before you have any time to become invested in them.

The story itself goes into great detail and does quite well to make the whole premise seem plausible but is otherwise not terribly compelling. With no emotional attachment to any of the characters, I felt detached from the entire cascade of events as though watching as a neutral observer.

Ultimately though I can't help but wonder if my disappointment with this book was due mainly to the lacklustre narration. Rich Orlow seemed incapable of capturing the tone of any given scene and routinely tripped over sentence structure and emphasis. Honestly, you could use Kindle's text-to-speech feature for much the same delivery.

Enjoyed it

Pretty good story; resembled an updated Tora Tora Tora. Narration wasn't the best, but ok.

Great story of the next World War

This is great for those interested in future conflict. The story unfolds brilliantly by bouncing around between sides in specific locations - just like an action movie.

It is let down slightly by the narration which at times is flat and disjointed, but the narrator does make a good job of providing the wide range of characters a voice.

Complex and fast paced

A great story, although at times difficult to follow and know where you are/ who is involved and which part of the plot is being described. Highly technical in terms of how the military developments are created and evolved, but very engaging.
