Summary
As featured on BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio 5 Live Selected as one of the Independent’s 10 best pregnancy books for expectant parents.
Birth is a feminist issue. It’s the feminist issue nobody’s talking about.
For too long women have been told, ‘a healthy baby is all that matters’. This book dares to say women matter too.
Finally blasting the feminist spotlight into the labour ward, Milli Hill encourages women everywhere to stand and deliver, insisting that birth is no longer left off the list in discussions about female power, control and agency.
From the importance of birth plans to your human rights in childbirth, and including birth stories from women across the world, this call-to-arms will help you find your voice, take an active role in your choices, and change the way you think about childbirth.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

Essential reading/listening
Enlightening, informative and most of all important, not just for expectant parents but for anyone interested in knowing more about paternalistic medicine and patient — informed — choice.

Shows the misogyny and coercion of maternity care
All of Milli’s books are absolutely amazing. She’s such a clever author who is completely for women. I don’t identify as a typical feminist yet this book opened my eyes to how policies are for ease rather than women

Good conversation starter
I found the book very interesting as a student midwife. It made me reflect on things I’ve witnessed and gave me more insight into other perspectives and I found a lot of the stories very informative. I do think there could’ve been even more conversation on certain aspects of obstetric violence and consent (such as black mothers being more likely to have bad outcomes) and solutions to these issues that don’t just involve private midwives and doulas as in my opinion the book, perhaps unintentionally, did have a tone that I believed painted NHS maternity care quite badly for women who decide to give birth in different ways. It would be interesting to hear more of Milli Hill’s and others opinions on how these issues of properly informed consent and obstetric violence can be resolved which doesn’t always include going private. I enjoyed this book overall because it gave me a different perspective even if I didn’t agree with SOME of what was said about healthcare professionals.
