Great story, well read

Would you consider the audio edition of Hand for a Hand to be better than the print version?

I discovered T.F Muir through Audible and have only listened to the audiobook versions of his novels.

What other book might you compare Hand for a Hand to, and why?

I enjoyed the first one, An Eye for an Eye, and was not disappointed by the sequel. DI Gilchrist is deepening as a character and the relationship with his children and ex-wife is explored in more depth in this novel.

What about David Monteath’s performance did you like?

David Monteath gave an excellent performance, reading with great interpretation and believable accents.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It's just as well that audiobooks are portable as I found myself listening at all available opportunities - while in the car, walking the dog, cooking etc.

Any additional comments?

I don't think you need to have read/listened to the first one before getting this one as the stories are entirely separate and this doesn't refer in any way to the first book. I'll certainly be getting the next one.

Enjoyable but grim

I enjoyed this book but I found it a bit stressful in places and if the books get much more grim I may have to give up. The narration was excellent and the main character is likeable, believable which made the difficult aspects of the plot tolerable.

Mediocre story carried by enjoyable narration.

David Monteath keeps you going through a plot that is barely credible, is excessively brutal and painfully sexualized. I listened to the first book in the series and thought it a good enough murder/police procedure to get the second. The hero had so much self doubt that it seems unlikely that he would get out of bed each day let alone chase down bad guys. The investigation steps as written seem so weak , I.e. why wasn't the evil bad guy identified in chapter 4 after threatening revenge at his trial years before, or key clues were discussed and gone over again and again for chapters before realised. As for the quasi erotic sex scenes, overuse of descriptions of female pubis, breasts and nipples and the imbalance from complete lack of male sexual attributes; I came close to switching off. Excessive brutality to women makes the narrative painful not shocking. I might try book 3 but only after a break and would only listen while I get some other tasks completed.

This started as a 3/4 star thriller, very ably narrated by David Monteith. It developed into a potboiler that I could not put down. It has a sense of realism about it, based as it is in the back streets of St Andrews, Scotland. The author draws you in with the well-developed persona of Andy Gilchrist.
I have listened to the other two books in this series and already ordered my fourth.
If you like crime stories, I recommend it.
