Summary

In this now classic text, Martha Beckwith skillfully navigated an expansive collection of books, articles, and manuscripts to compile the definitive collection of mythological narratives of the native Hawaiian peoples. In addition to its importance for Hawaiian folklore and ethnology proper, Beckwith situates these stories within their broader regional context, offering comparisons to the traditions of Tahiti, Tonga, Samoa and other island nations.

Ill fitted narrator

The narrator gives me the impression that she has done some preparation in terms of the Hawaiian language yet she seems to lack cultural context and is mispronouncing the most common names and words. It is very hard for me to keep listening and I tried finding unknown words in the book as additional guide for when I was not able to „guess“ the region, name or word I wanted to research.

The information in the book and the sources used are extensive so it is a valuable source for understanding the mythological and cultural landscape of Hawaii. I hope to finish it but the narration makes it very challenging for me. I would suggest listening to the extract or preview see if you tolerate/enjoy the narration.
