La conspiración shandy, o sociedad secreta de los portátiles, fue fundada en 1924 en la desembocadura del río Níger y quedó disuelta tres años después, tras un espectacular escándalo, en Sevilla. Formaron parte de la conjetura shandy, entre otros, Duchamp, Scott Fitzgerald, Walter Benjamin, César Vallejo, Rita Malú, Valery Larbaud, García Lorca, Pola Negri, Berta Bocado, Alberto Savinio y Georgia O'Keefe. Dos requisitos eran imprescindibles para formar parte de la sociedad secreta: junto a que la obra artística de uno fuera portátil, es decir, que no fuera pesada y pudiera ser fácilmente trasladable en un maletín, la otra condición era la de funcionar como una perfecta máquina soltera. Aunque no imprescindibles, se recomendaba también poseer ciertos rasgos que eran considerados como específicamente shandys: sexualidad extrema, espíritu innovador, ausencia de grandes propósitos, insolencia, tensa convivencia con el doble, simpatía por la negritud y nomadismo infatigable. Más allá de las páginas de su edición original, esta historia, originó diversas conspiraciones en la vida real.
