Summary

The dictionary defines a statesman as a person who exhibits great wisdom and ability in directing the affairs of a government or in dealing with important public issues. Throughout world history, there have been countless famous statesmen from all across the world. The true colors and talents of a statesman usually shine through in the most difficult of circumstances, and the most difficult circumstance that any world leader faces is warfare. The 20th century was a century of almost constant warfare, from the Russo-Japanese War, World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, the strife and fighting in the Middle East, and the American War on terrorism. It was a century where men and women were pushed to their limits.

One man shines above the rest, a man who used his wit, intelligence, and drive to bring not only his beloved England through the worst of times, but also helped save democracy for the entire world. Winston Spencer Churchill led England through her darkest hours, became a champion against fascism and communism, and helped secure western civilization. It was not always easy going, as Churchill went through disgrace in his early career and was forced to rebuild his reputation, brick by brick. It did not always seem that Churchill was destined for this greatness as he spent many years in the political wilderness of Britain because of his refusal to conform and "play the game", so to speak. But, as usual, the power of personality and the strength of character shone through and won the day. Indeed, without Churchill, one could argue that the fate of democracy in the world might have suffered a different fate. Churchill was the driving force behind the British resistance to the Nazi onslaught during World War II, using his power of personality and his brilliance as a world leader. Churchill remained a shining light of democracy during Europe’s darkest hour.

History in 30: The Life of Winston Churchill provides a quick but comprehensive look at the British prime minister.
