Summary

The call to Christian discipleship is a call to adventure. Holy Habits explores the nature of that adventure through a rich mix of biblical material and inspiring stories. The nurturing role of the 10 holy habits of discipleship as seen in Acts 2 is then explored.

The 10 habits are:

  • Biblical teaching
  • Fellowship
  • Breaking of bread
  • Prayer
  • Giving
  • Service
  • Eating together
  • Gladness and generosity
  • Worship
  • Making more disciples

Each chapter has suggestions for further reflection and action that can be used individually or by smaller or larger Christian communities.

Grounded explanation of Discipleship

I've just finished listening to this as I followed along with the physical book copy as a core text for a theology course. I wasn't sure where this was going to start connecting for my specific interest, but I hit home when we reached the chapter on Holy Habitats. the whole book is a well thought-out and detailed analysis of what it means to disciple others in the 21st century, without turning it's back on the biblical principles of Discipleship.

Lacks something

Andrew Roberts isn’t the best narrator. Although, after the last Christian book I listened to was so badly narrated by the author, anything would seem good. He’s a bit of a boring voice to listen to, but better than some. I do think the content lacks something so far. My initial impression of Andrew Roberts is that he’s not a systematic theologian who will use the whole Bible to back up what he’s saying. He’s taken one verse on its own, and hasn’t unpacked it enough with the rest of the word of God. I’d call this less of a theology book, and more of a Christian living ideas book. Not great for deeper study, but perhaps good for inspiring you to think about doing some deeper study. Personally, I think he was most engaging when talking about his own life, and the ideal he was trying to get across lacked substance in his delivery.
