Summary

She sees everything, but can never tell anyone…a wickedly compulsive thriller from the best-selling author of the Bryant & May series.

At a beautiful villa in the south of France, Hannah Carreras works as a maid. Under strict instructions never to speak to the guests, she blends into the background - but she sees everything, including the mistress, Summer, lounging by the pool, awaiting the arrival of her married lover, Steve.

When Steve finally shows at the villa - with his family unexpectedly in tow - Summer has vanished. Steve claims he never saw her. But Steve’s wife is no fool: she knows there’s something going on. Whose tiny bikini lies by the pool? Whose perfume is in the bathroom?

Before long, the local police start asking questions, and the villa’s occupants have something to hide. Only Hannah, always listening, watching, saw broken glass and blood near the pool the day Summer disappeared. Only Hannah thinks she knows what lies are being told....

A bit disappointing

I love the Bryant and May books and read good reviews for this one so gave it a try. Whilst the writing is as ever, very good, and the narration is excellent, I was disappointed with the story. All of the characters bar one or two are not very nice people and I felt no affinity for them. The story kept me listening but I found the end very disappointing.

Not for me

I loved the Bryant and May books. I realised this was a different genre but thought it was worth trying. The book was well written but I found the characters completely unsympathetic so did not really engage with the story. I did want to find out what happened but with just under 2 hours to go I was just wishing it was over. I found it got increasingly tedious and was glad when I got to the end. I will be extremely hesitant to try any more books by Christopher Fowler. So disappointing.

entertaining, confusing and infuriating

Love the Bryant and May books but this was a mixed bag. Keeps you guessing, funny at times and well read, but also infuriating in parts, with characters doing ridiculous things. The main protagonist, who so far has proven to be intelligent and organised, finds a piece of incriminating evidence, so what does she do? Of course she, alone, confronts the unhinged suspect telling him that she has the item. Surprise, surprise, the suspect attacks her, takes the evidence and destroys it. Well, who'd have guessed that might happen! Oh and all of the French provincial village and local police characters are portrayed in a very poor light.

Implausible characters and plot but somehow keeps you hooked

I can’t recall why I chose this book; it’s a very lightweight novel, with rather implausible characters and an even more implausible plot but despite this I listened to the end - I wanted to know what really happened. The narrator did a good job.

Fabulous!

Really enjoyed this book, loved the location which I could visualise very well from the writing. The ending was quite a surprise and not what I had thought it might have been. The narrator was perfect.

A Great Story!

I loved this story. It was just abit too long. The narration was spot on, Rachel Atkins did a grand job, except some times
the odd characters almost
sounded alike, but that's because because Rachel 's voice is so strong I think,
. Well she is the same person for them all 🥴. Crhristopher
wrote a really great story, and I
like the way he did the contents
too, and story, that's for you to
find out.?

Glad I bought it!

My first Fowler and I really enjoyed it - never once did I wonder when it would come to an end. The characters were well created and the action had just the right pace. At times I did wonder if I'd worked it out and in a sense I was was on the right track but it had a nice twist. The setting in France was fun and actually rather accurate in terms of the French characters.
The performance was great, very easy to listen to and with all the right nuances to keep one interested.
I can't understand what there may be not to enjoy.
