Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

YOU CAN'T SAVE YOUR KIDS. BUT CAN YOU STOP THEM?

It's a week before the presidential elections when a bomb goes off in an LA shopping mall.

In London, armed police storm Heathrow Airport and arrest Sajid Khan. His daughter, Aliyah entered the USA with the suicide bomber, and now she's missing, potentially plotting another attack on American soil.

But then a woman called Carrie turns up at Sajid's door after travelling halfway across the world. She claims Aliyah is with her son and she has a clue to their whereabouts. Carrie knows something isn't adding up - and that she and Sajid are the only ones who can find their children and discover the truth.

On the run from the authorities, the two parents are thrown together in a race against time to save their kids and stop a catastrophe that will derail the country's future forever.

For fans of Adrian McKinty's The Chain and Clare Mackintosh's Hostage, this blockbuster contemporary thriller will turn your world on its head.

Tense, gripping, uncompromising

A thrilling and thoughtful read, which convincingly addresses the grey areas of both terrorism and patriotism. Beautifully acted out in audiobook

Sorry.A bit of a miss.

I loved this author's other books, but I'm sorry to say this one just didn't match up to his usual high standards.

Contrived

Implausible story with no suspense and ending left unfinished by leaving you to assume both son and daughter saved but obviously will spend rest of their lives in prison

The dad

Good twisty plot but totally unresolved and abrupt ending. Needed another 3 hours to follow through on all the threads.

An exciting listen.

I really enjoyed this. I've listened to all of the Wyndham series and loved them. This is completely different, modern, political and exciting from start to finish.

Gripping!

This is a lot different to the Wyndham and Banerjee books but still brilliant. The characters are well developed and you care about what happens to them (I do anyway!). It's quite fast paced which gets you hooked from the beginning and leads you on a cat and mouse chase. Good one Mr Mukherjee! 👏

A very good read

A very contemporary story line with multiple characters interwoven into a good plot. Thought the different narrators also worked well

Loved it

This book is certainly gripping from beginning to end. It’s suspenseful, unpredictable, everything you want a thriller to be. There are political aspects both uk and USA, this book is incredibly powerful. Loved it.

Terrific change of direction with this new story from Abir Mukherjee

A thriller that gives voice to those impacted by United States wars, participants in them, victims and those challenging. Very moving

Clever story and interesting characters

There are plenty of twists and turns in this thriller. For me, though, what made it more than another political thriller are the characters and the insight they provide into the experiences of BAME people living in the UK and US, the prejudice encountered, everyday injustices, which as a white woman were quite challenging to hear - which is a good thing as it has definitely increased my understanding of people’s lived experiences.
