About this listen

The inspiration for the major new BBC drama series Dublin Murders.

When he was 12 years old, Adam Ryan went playing in the woods one day with his two best friends. He never saw them again. Their bodies were never found, and Adam himself was discovered with his back pressed against an oak tree and his shoes filled with blood. He had no memory of what had happened.

Twenty years on, Rob Ryan - the child who came back - is a detective in the Dublin police force. He's changed his name. No one knows about his past. Then a little girl's body is found at the site of the old tragedy and Rob is drawn back into the mystery. Knowing that he would be thrown off the case if his past were revealed, Rob takes a fateful decision to keep quiet but hope that he might also solve the twenty-year-old mystery of the woods.

good story, well narrated

a well told story of past and present crimes... can't say too much without giving away the plot... but I was right! good characters, shame about the ending

riveting

so cross that when they made it into a serial on TV they combined both in the woods and the likeness. noth amazing books on their own. love the characters and hope the next book is Sam's voice!

Really enjoyed it.

Good rounded characters and plot. A good whodunit but slightly sad ending. Have already downloaded the next book.

Strongly recommend

Fantastic crime thriller, and excellent narrator - I'm usually very picky (honestly, I reject 95% of audiobooks because the narrator puts me off) so I can't understand the reviews. It needs speeding up, like all narration does, but it's one of the few audiobook novels I've been able to get into.

Unexpected ending

Would have liked to learn what happened to the children. Otherwise a good story, but a bit long.

Great book, good performance, but shame about....

Great book, good performance, but shame about characters. Just didn't care what happened to them. Also, some of the intertwining stories never really concluded... But great twists and quite an original story line.

Impressive debut

Strong, well written characters. Don’t want to give anything away, but this is unsettling in ways you’d least expect.
I’ll definitely be looking to read more books by Tana French.

Whinging

The plot has lots of potentially interesting twists and development but there is just too much whining by the central character. Probably half the book, so this great if you are more interested in his psychological development than the murder/s, but Not for me.

Liked the Irish accents in the other books better.

Another grim, claustrophobic dip into the detective's past! A sort of messy tangle of disturbing characters. Intellectually rivetting, but only a glimps of a cliff hanger. But that's just her style.
