Danskeren Hannah viser sig at blive hovedpersonen i et psykodrama, som kommer til at udspille sig i gruppen. Instituttet er en fortælling om manipulation i en forvrænget virkelighed. Hannah ender med at stå alene og stemplet af de andre, som bliver i forblændelsen og den angst, der fastholder dem i den manipulatoriske verden. Bogen er struktureret om 11 kapitler, der har hver sin stemme, idet hvert medlem i gruppen fortæller historien ud fra sit synspunkt.
