Summary
The newly discovered Gospel of Jesus' Wife was revealed to the public in September of 2012. The small scrap of codex is the size of a credit card, but it has reignited controversy over what is now mounting evidence that Jesus may have been married.
Gospels and letters, some hidden by the church and some lost until recently, tell the story of who Jesus was, what he looked like, and hint at who he may have married. Were Jesus of Nazareth and Mary of Magdala husband and wife? The evidence is piling up.
The Gospel of Jesus' Wife states, “The disciples said to Jesus, 'Mary is worthy of it.' Jesus said to them, 'My wife, she will be able to be my disciple.'”
The Gospel of Philip continues this thought by adding, “And the companion (Consort) was Mary of Magdala. The Lord loved Mary more than all the other disciples and he kissed her often on her mouth”. (Although the text is damaged at the word “mouth”, the word is assumed.)
Philip goes on to report, “The others saw his love for Mary and asked him: 'Why do thou love her more than all of us?' The Savior replied, 'Why do I not love you in the same way I love her?'”
According to The Gospel of Mary Magdalene, Peter said to Mary, “Sister we know that the Savior loved you more than all other woman. Tell us the words of the Savior that you remember and know, but have we heard and do not know.” Mary answered him and said; “I will tell you what He hid from you.“
Were Jesus and Mary of Magdala married, or is the mounting evidence simply part of Gnostic theology propagated through false gospels? Evidence will be presented so the listener can decide.
