About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Over 1 million Discworld audiobooks sold – discover the extraordinary universe of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld like never before.

'Neighbours... hah. People'd live for ages side by side, nodding at one another amicably on their way to work, and then some trivial thing would happen and someone would be having a garden fork removed from their ear.'

When the neighbours in question are the proud empires of Klatch and Ankh-Morpork, those are going to be some pretty large garden tools indeed. Of course, no-one would dream of starting a war without a perfectly good reason...such as a 'strategic' piece of old rock in the middle of nowhere.

It is after all every citizen's right to bear arms to defend their own. Even if it isn't technically their own. And even if they don't have much in the way of actual weaponry. As two armies march, Commander Vimes of Ankh-Morpork City Watch faces unpleasant foes who are out to get him... and that's just the people on his side. The enemy might be even worse.

The Discworld novels can be listened to in any order but Jingo is the fourth book in the City Watch series.

the characters of The Watch

I do like these stories with The Watch very amusing as the banter between Nobby and Colon

Just top, top notch.

I really can’t think of an audio performance I have enjoyed more. There are some wonderful narrators out there. Stephen Fry, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith to name a couple but the variety here is spectacular every character is pitch perfect in their bringing to life. The interplay between Colon & Nobby is genius. I have listened to Tony Robinson, Nigel Planer read discworld and enjoyed them but this another level. 7 or 8 stars if I could give it. Off to find if they have re done going postal !!

Am I crazy or...

... Has penguin replaced Vimes' "ye gods" with "good grief"??? It's taken me 3 books to figure out what was so off, I love the narration but I'm sure they've changed the wording. Someone please tell me why.

Practically a dramatisation!

I love the Guards books and Vimes has always been a favourite character so I was delighted to find this audiobook so fantastically narrated.
Culshaw is brilliant - each character is distinctive and consistently voiced - I know some haven’t liked the choices of accents/voices but they work for me (and seriously - they can’t match up everyone’s inner narrative, can they?) Vimes as a grizzled Yorkshireman, Carrot’s earnest tones, Nobby’s… well, Nobby, and Vetinari oozes the right mixture of intelligence, ruthlessness and charisma.
The dialogue zings and it’s given me a whole new appreciation for these old favourites. The material is handled respectfully and Pratchett’s humour and darker observations of humanity shine through it all.
I’m absolutely blown away - quite simple brilliant - thank you to everyone involved.

One of my favourite Watch stories

This is a really enjoyable performance of the Discworld satire on war and diplomacy. The characters of Vimes, Carrot and Vetinari are particularly well realised.

Hilarious

I read this book, but Jon Culshaw really brings it to life. It seems so much funnier read out. I literally laughed out loud at certain points. Brilliant. For the lovers of Discworld, this is a must! Highly recommend it.

I adore Terry Pratchett’s writing and this is one of my favourite stories of his. The narration is fantastic, well produced.
