Summary

Seeing spirits is one thing, but feeling the pain of their death is an experience best left alone. Restless spirits, a ghost dog, and two men connected to the spirit world. What could go wrong? Bran Tanda works at the hospital morgue despite the fact he can see and hear all the spirits that tend to congregate there. He wants to help them, even if they terrify him with their aggressive tactics to get him to acknowledge their existence.
Jordan Amid is Bran’s assistant. He’s reluctant to interact too much with the dead since he can feel all the pain from their death and the confusion they’re left with. But he’s drawn to work there with Bran, and his ghost dog Buddy. Bran and Jordan are thrown into a world where things are changing, and without their help everyone will suffer the dead. Stronger together than separately, they’ll both need to face their fears and find the strength they’ll need to fight the evil forces that threaten them and all of humanity.

Interesting story, but weird narration

I enjoyed the story of Bran and Jordan, which sounds like a prequel to a bigger story, but the narration of the audiobook made it feel more like a comedy than a serious story. Bran can see spirits after a near-drowning as a child, while Jordan feels their pain. You might expect them to avoid the dead, but they work, of all places, in a morgue. When unexplained things start happening, they seek the guidance of someone who knows more about them both, and they find out they are part of something much bigger. It was an engaging and intriguing introduction, but the audiobook narrator gave Bran and Jordan voices that sounded like characters from the old cartoon Scooby-Doo. and that kept pulling me from the story and ruined any chance for me to take it seriously. My honest advice is to read the ebook and skip the audiobook.

Great start to a new series

Bran and Jordan have special abilities that allow them to communicate with the dead.
Initially they both keep it secret from others and each other.
An unsettling case comes in that forces the issue and also brings in others knowledgeable about the afterlife.
This series is going to tie in others from previous series Valley Ghosts and Mystical Markings and I can't wait for it.
Dark times are coming and everyone needs to be ready.
The narrator did an amazing job bringing these characters to life.

We’re going to have fun with this new series!

With “we” I mean us readers, and probably Ms. Maxwell, too, not so much the Sacramento paranormal community, who’s going to have their hands full with a new threat!
This short prequel introduces us to Bran and Jordan, both connected to the spirit word, in different ways, and both working at the morgue (because, why not?) and gives us a glimpse into their powers and what we may expect from this new series. I honestly can’t wait to listen to more!

A story that comes to life... In more ways than on

It is just another day at the morgue, but in actuality it isn't, this is going to turn into a day like no other and if you have not read the story before listening to it - you don't have to, I did but I love to do that, then be prepared for a short but gripping listen.

Hearing the characters come to life, especially the spirits is intriguing and the narrator, Allen Jeffries, manages to give each character a relatively distinct voice which helps. We can understand how each character feels, we feel their fears, worries, thoughts. It is fascinating to listen to, absorbing and possibly not one for bedtime.

Audio books bring their story to life, making it somehow even more real, this one is no exception so, if you like your stories short and not very sweet at all this one is for you!.
