About this listen
An Astra Militarum Novel.
An elite squad of Cadian Kasrkin are tasked with a critical mission behind enemy lines. They must rescue their general in xenos-held territory before his dangerous knowledge falls into enemy hands. But not all is as it seems....
Listen to it because....
Hear the legendary elite soldiers of Cadia in action as they take on a mission so dangerous it could only be trusted to troops with their training and equipment.
The story:
When the perfidious t’au bring down a valkyrie containing an Astra Militarum general on the besieged Imperial world of Dasht i-Kevar, all could be lost—what the general knows could break the war effort, and see the planet fall under the control of the vile xenos.
Only the Kasrkin stand a chance at bringing him back. They are the elite of the elite, but the enemy that Captain Bharath Obeysekera and his squad are called upon to fight is unlike any they have faced before—the desert itself, endless and implacable.
With sandstorms cutting them off from support, Obeysekera has only his soldiers to rely on. As the Kasrkin journey deeper into the wastes, they begin to realise they’re not the only hunters searching for the missing general, and that their war has caught the attention of something ancient lurking beneath the desert sands…

Kasrikin not the elite you'd expect
Well delivered story and is well thought out however the Kasrkin don't feel like the elite force they are meant to be. They are described more like normal Guardsman, not the elite you'd expect them to be.

Good but not expected
So overall I found this a very good book and enjoyed the characters and the story and as my first “proper” guard book I was very impressed.
My only issue, which might be a personal one, was that the Kasrkins didn’t seem to act like Kasrkins in my eyes. When I saw this book released I had recently finished the Eisenhorn series , I’m aware it’s a different author, and in the book he describes these kasrkins to be so well trained that he’s more scared of them than a demon host, the fact they don’t even scream at dying or feel fear that it gave me goosebumps and was definatly the most exciting part of the book for me. In this book I find they don’t seem to act like kasrkins and joke about too much which I guess you have to to make a good story but I think if these chaps were just Cadian shock troopers instead of kasrkins it would make more sense seeing what they do and act and wouldn’t bother me
All in all still a good read

That narrator!
The narration of this story really helped bring the whole home. Great performance, and brilliant story with traitors, blueys and tin men. 10/10

Excellent
Well paced, well read and quickly took to the characters. Brought some needed personality to the Kasrkin that's been lacking in other books. Would be nice to see further adventures from these characters.

Fun and killteam themed
A blast to hear about Kroot inner workings and frontline troops rather than Astartes. It felt like it was based on a small killteam narrative
