Summary

Fearne Cotton's Happy Place Book Club Pick

'Fiercely funny, truly fascinating and inspiring . . . I was hooked from the first page.' - Mel Giedroyc
'Warm, wise, witty and wet your pants hilarious' - Laura Bates, author of Everyday Sexism

Jo Cheetham was a long way from home, studying and working as a nanny in London, when she saw news of an upcoming protest against the Page 3 pictorial in The Sun and decided to go along. Before she could talk herself out of it, Jo officially joined the No More Page 3 campaign team.

Over the course of the next three years, Jo protested up and down the country, attended parliament and made an unlikely group of friends, ranging from sixteen to sixty, that would become her closest confidants and allies. Whether it was through an impromptu flash mob or a nerve-wracking group performance on the West End stage, Jo's world started to get a lot bigger.

Hilarious, brilliantly warm and moving, Killjoy is a story of everyday people doing extraordinary things, the power of a grassroots campaign and ultimately what you can achieve when you shout a little bit louder.

'Funny and inspiring' - Rachel Cooke, The Guardian, 'Non-fiction to look out for in 2023'

'Snappily written with humour and irreverence, it unpeels the insanity of our patriarchal society and why it can and must change. Order it now, is our advice.' - Stylist, 'Non-fiction books you can’t miss in 2023'

'A heroic and humorous account of the woman who found herself at the head of the No More Page 3 campaign, in a group of ordinary people doing extraordinary things.' - Independent, '19 debut authors set to make their mark this year'

Please read this book!

I ended up walking home from work, five extra kilometres, just to keep on listening. Interesting and inspiring every step of the way. Also loved listening to it in JC’s voice.

A must read

Absolutely fascinating. It is such recent history but somehow feels like a different time. Inspiring and thought provoking. Thank you for sharing your story and for raising awareness/making such a difference to the fight for gender equality.

Laugh, cry, then laugh again - BUY THIS BOOK.

This book is so brilliantly written, a testament to the power of female friendship. It's so funny and moving all the way through, essentially a story of an unlikely heroine who is catapulted into taking on one of the most powerful newspapers in the world. What I most loved about this book is the ever-surprising ways that Jo Cheetham combines her words. It's rare to read a full length book that never lapses into lazy clichés or over-engineered phrasing. The language throughout is so incredibly engaging. I was delighted over and again by the author's ability to draw me into her scenes and make me feel part of the experience. It's a heartening book too, about our human frailties, and how perhaps we don't ever have to confront and overcome our very particular fears, and instead, we can just shine in the areas we are meant to instead. Loved it.

I loved this!

What an empowering story! Thank you so much Jo for sharing this incredible journey. I too was brought up in the age of the page three girl and it always made me feel weird and uncomfortable. Thank you for bringing it to an end.
A well written, thoughtful and inspiring biography!
Excellent narration, really brought this to life.
Use a credit you won’t regret it.

Wow!

I had no idea how this movement had started; grass-roots and young women. it took me right back to a time when things like this were just accepted as 'just a bit of fun'. This group of women took us out of the 70s and into the present. Perfection narrated and relatable.
