"Sensationally good. Cleverly conceived and brilliantly executed. One of the great thrillers of the last century." (Charles Cumming)
"I've never read a thriller that so successfully transported me to a hitherto unimagined place." ( Guardian)

If you're unsure, give it a go!

As advised by other listeners skip the forward and listen at the end, I nearly made the mistake.
It is one of those books you will ponder long after it's over. Keep warm and enjoy!

The best listen ever ...

After finishing this book I did something I've never ever done before - I started to listen to it all over again immediately AND bought the paperback so that I could see the spelling of character and location names ...
One aspect of the plot was somewhat improbable (though maybe not, who knows) but otherwise the story was fascinating and gripping, and the way in which the main character arrived at and departed from his destination was ingenious and beautifully written ... I felt as if I was experiencing the journey with him, apart from the cold ...
I don't think I've been so absorbed in/by a story since childhood and I found that the reading (at 1.25 speed) had a sort of hypnotic affect on me, no doubt due to the clear and unobtrusive narration by Peter Noble ...

An odd but interesting story

A classic quest. The hero has amazing linguistic abilities in addition to the usual resourcefulness, but it is enjoyable. A map of Eastern siberia would be helpful but not essential, the hero does not have one!!

Perfect narration

If you like a chunky read with interesting detail and steady suspense this is perfect for you. I was bereft to discover there wasn’t a sequel.

Good performance, bizarre plot twist.

A good listen. Unfortunately spoilt when the pivotal secret of the story is revealed (stunned disbelief / disappointment rather than a good plot vehicle) . And, the finale is a bit far fetched, and too bloody for me. Luckily there's more to the story, a good base.

For the most part I enjoyed the general storyline and performance.

I didn't listen to chapter 1 on the basis of other reviews.

70/30 if I'd read/listen another book by the same author - probably a second choice, I'm struggling to find first choices!

Don’t listen to the introduction.

I agree with other reviewers. Don’t listen to the introduction as it gives too much away. A very different audible book than I normally listen to but absolutely loved it. Great narration.
