Conservato a Costantinopoli e poi nelle Marche, durante l'occupazione nazista il prezioso manoscritto rischiò più volte di essere rubato dagli emissari di Adolf Hitler, che lo considerava un importantissimo documento sulla grandezza della nobile stirpe germanica. Lo stesso Mussolini, per favorire le richieste del governo tedesco, tentò di ottenerlo; poi però lasciò perdere, per via del clamore che il fatto aveva suscitato nel mondo intellettuale italiano.
