About this listen

Mudlark (/'mAdla;k/) noun A person who scavenges for usable debris in the mud of a river or harbour.

Lara Maiklem has scoured the banks of the Thames for over 15 years, in pursuit of the objects that the river unearths: from Neolithic flints to Roman hair pins, medieval buckles to Tudor buttons, Georgian clay pipes to Victorian toys.

These objects tell her about London and its lost ways of life. Moving from the river's tidal origins in the west of the city to the point where it meets the sea in the east, Mudlarking is a search for urban solitude and history on the River Thames, what Lara calls 'the longest archaeological site in the world'.

Read like a Novel.

Beautifully read. Simple down to earth descriptions and a voice that made it such a pleasure to listen to. I felt Ms Maiklem's romantic ghosts speaking from the depths, every character coming alive. It was, in places, more like a novel. I felt so much nostalgic longing for London listening every day. I don't believe I could have enjoyed this book more if I had read it myself.

History of small finds

I really enjoyed this book. It took a few pages to get into it but then I found it engaging and intriguing. The book is written in a really good prose and links the rhythm of the Thames, finding intriguing items and the history of both. As the book went along it felt I was finding new finds as the mudlarker did and the fascinating history of the objects. The narration is a little flat at times but generally fits the text well and didn’t spoil my enjoyment.

Poetic and riveting.....

This is a book I could take on my desert island.
I thought it was so beautifully written and Lara narrates it perfectly. It is so intimate yet the subject so vast, I found myself so lost in the melodic flow that it became almost hypnotic and I would have to rewind and listen again.

I know that this will be book that I will listen to over and over again, everything about it is absolutely perfect.

quietly engrossing - carried along with the Thames

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this especially today as I have been rush seating an old Suffolk chair and this was the ideal companion. Fascinating finds and excellent research of history and stories connected with the Thames and its changing communities.
Thank you Lara.
