Il est loin d'elle, sans possibilité même de lui faire un dernier adieu puisque les Allemands ont envahi la "zone libre" le 9 novembre 1942. La douleur submerge Albert Cohen. Il en naîtra presque immédiatement un texte admirable, Un chant de mort, qu'il reprendra en 1953 et qui deviendra dans sa version définitive Le Livre de ma mère.
