About this listen
Learn to collaborate with others, think on your feet, and celebrate mistakes using the skills of improv theater
So many of us go through life following scripts we didn’t write for ourselves—scripts designed by our family, shaped by our friends, and influenced by the expectations of the people we meet. But the script that worked when we were younger can impact us in different ways as adults and make it tough to get along in the world.
Drawing from contemporary understandings in neuroscience and psychology, psychologist Jeff Katzman and Dan O'Connor, cofounder of TheaterSports LA, explore the nature of our personal capacities and limitations. Through an application of ideas from improvisational theater, we can all learn to collaborate with those around us, to think on our feet, and to celebrate our mistakes. Life Unscripted offers the reader critical tools to enrich relationships, unleash the imagination, and build a more personally meaningful life. Using exercises like “Yes, And,”, “Mistakes as Gifts,” and “No Waffling,” the authors convey practical take-aways for every chapter.

Life Unscripted details how the magic of an improv class can open doors and change lives without years of talk therapy.… This is a book for all of us facing an increasingly unstable world. Learn why improv is the most delightful way to ‘get over yourself’ and ‘create a life of meaning." (Patricia Ryan Madson, Stanford professor emerita and author of Improv Wisdom: Don’t Prepare, Just Show Up)
“Life Unscripted is simply wonderful. Jeff Katzman and Dan O’Connor give the reader a simple, clear explanation of the development of our sense of self.… Life Unscripted is apt to be invaluable to mental health professionals and will be inspirational to all.” (Robin Kissell, MD, training and supervising psychoanalyst at the New Center for Psychoanalysis and associate clinical professor at the UCLA Semel Institute)
“[Life Unscripted offers] a wonderful tone, terrific examples, citations, and anecdotes in both professional areas, and a number of fresh takes on applied improv. This is a lovely addition to the canon.” (Kat Koppett, author of Training to Imagine)

Should be taught in schools
Brilliant book. Great for those of us who have trained and performed in improv to validate the benefits of it for enhancing life skills which we already knew and would extol to any who would listen, and has scientific research to back up comments.
Also an inspiring book for those wishing to find good reason to be brave enough to go an enjoy improv and the life skills it brings.
If this book was on the school reading curriculum then we'd have happier, more confident, social astute children.
