About this listen
A love story, an adventure, and an epic of the frontier, Larry McMurtry's Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, Lonesome Dove, is the grandest novel ever written about the last defiant wilderness of America.
Two retired Texas Rangers, Captains Woodrow Call and Augustus "Gus" McCrae, lead a cattle drive from the small town of Lonesome Dove to the unsettled Montana territories. On their grueling journey, they are joined by Joshua Deets, a Black scout and former Ranger, Jake Spoon, a fugitive, and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy who may have family ties to Call. Richly authentic, beautifully written, always dramatic, Lonesome Dove will make listeners laugh and weep, dream and remember.
This remastered audio edition is expertly read by actor Lee Horsley, best known for his starring role in the television series Matt Houston.

Beautifully story beautifully told
I do enjoyed this Audible story, that, as it is very long, I decided to purchase a copy from here after my library loan ran out. So beautiful. I'm sure I will listen again one day...

Epic and Unforgettable
The length was daunting at first but half way through i found i was siphoning my listening to drag it out longer. Beautifully written, consuming narration, an unforgettable story with rich and complex characters. It takes you across a vast landscape and I felt i was right there with them.
Could not recommend more highly.

What a journey
This was the first Western I had read. Until about an hour or so in I was skeptical. It seemed slow with not much happening. I’m glad I did keep listening, because I ended up hooked.
You grow attached to the story and it’s characters. Listening to it, it’s as though you were right there with them. What’s more, it contains every conceivable emotion you could think of. Human nature was captured wonderfully. You’ll likely feel almost a sense of loss at no longer being part of the world when you finish it.
The narration was perfect for the story. Albeit it, the voice for Gus did take a bit of getting used to. I don’t know whether it developed into less of a shout or I just got used to it. Either way, it was fine after a while.
More than worthy of the plaudits it receives

36 hours of sheer pleasure! Cannot recommend highly enough
What a brilliant gripping story of ordinary people caught up in the brutality of the colonial project. A corrective to the simplistic western, it is subtle, ironic, often funny, frequently tragic. The characters are superbly drawn, and Mcmurty is a male writer who depicts female characters with depth and complexity. Narration absolutely pitch perfect.

Lonesome Dove
An epic cowboy adventure, telling the story of the first cattle drive from Texas to Montana. The interesting characters are brought to life by the narrator, as you learn what life would have been like in the old west. Hours of entertainment, recommended.

Headline
Excellent narrator and a story that leaves you chuckling like a fine standup comedian
I would be very happy if this narrator read half the other books in my library.
