Disappointing Romantic Short Story
Emma Nate's short story "Love Unplanned" tells the story of Olivia and Ethan, who become involved in an unexpected relationship with exciting twists and turns. Olivia, a young college student, and Ethan, a handsome, wealthy businessman, first meet in a nightclub, where they immediately bond and share a passionate night. However, their next encounter is in a much more surprising situation, as Ethan is one of Olivia's university professors.
The initial tension in the story is the attraction between the characters and the resulting conflicts. A series of coincidental events, such as Ethan introducing Olivia as his fiancée to close a business deal, further complicates their relationship, which at first is based on physical attraction, but eventually, real emotions emerge. However, for me this process seemed a little too fast and unevolved.
Unfortunately, the novella did not deliver the experience I am used to from romantic stories. The relationship between the characters developed too quickly and abruptly, and the build-up to the passionate scenes was not sufficiently established. Especially during their first night together, I felt that the chemistry appeared suddenly, without the reader really getting into the tension between the two characters. The short story's ending was also abrupt and did not give the story a satisfying conclusion.
In addition, Olivia's character was hard for me to like. Her personality often showed contradictory and selfish traits, which made it difficult to empathise with her. When she found out that she was pregnant, her reactions also seemed rather selfish, which for me called into question the authenticity of their relationship dynamic. The supporting characters, especially Olivia's friends, were also disappointing. I didn't feel that they gave her any real support, their behaviour was quite shallow and often immature, which was not appropriate for a story about university students.
I listened to the short story in audiobook form, read by Melli Achna. The quality of the audiobook and the narrator's delivery undoubtedly heightened the experience, as she conveyed the characters' emotions and tension excellently. Even if the story itself did not fully captivate me, the dynamic and realisation of the narration added a lot to the overall effect.
Overall, unfortunately, I found Emma Nate's novel disappointing. Although the basic idea was promising, the relationship between the characters did not really become believable and the storytelling lacked credibility. I received a free copy of the audiobook version of "Love Unplanned" by Emma Nate via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
