Summary

Key West P.I. Gideon Lowry is no longer drowning his sorrow in rum these days. He's just drowning, and in desperate need of a lifesaver. Enter Katy Morgan of a local escort service, just the woman to see him through another lonely night. But by the morning after, it's Katy who hits rock bottom - her body is found on the kitchen floor of her trailer, way beyond anyone's help. The gruesome discovery plunges Gideon into a quarter-million-dollar mystery that leads from the treacherous currents of an offshore treasure-salvaging operation, to the dark secret haunting Katy's family, and down the twisted island path of an explosive sex scandal.

Gideon vows to bring the truth behind Katy's death to the surface - even if it means swimming with the sharks in a rising tide of Key West secrets, corruption, and betrayal.

I'm here to talk about Katie.

Any additional comments?

David Wood returns as the pianist and private eye, Gideon Lowry, in this the third of John Leslie's really pleasurable series. Key West used to be a close knit small town with a suspicion of outsiders, but tourism and developers has been changing this, to Lowry's sorrow. He still rides his bike through the streets when working and visiting old friends. One of these, the Judge, is unexpectedly getting married and so is an old girlfriend, now living in Miami, and suddenly Lowry feels lonely enough to reach out to another last acquaintance, a lovely girl named Katie. But she has problems of her own ...

Written in the first person from Gideon's perspective, the listener follows his investigation, turning up unpleasantness and evil in his beloved home town. The characters are all superbly written, virtually able to walk themselves off the page, and the storyline is twisted but believable as human nature, gossip and pretty good suppositions are followed up by the musician sleuth. Completely standalone as a novel, this series just keeps getting better.

And David Wood is Lowry. His gently paced, rich rolling voice is very easy on the ear and perfectly captures the feel of life in old Key West. Great intonation with a contemplative feel, too, as befits his character. The other protagonists are equally well voiced and differentiated, male and female alike. A step into another world and perfect pairing of book and narration.

This is a wonderful series, with mystery and realistic atmospherics. My deep thanks to the rights holder of Love for Sale, for gifting me a complimentary copy, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. I enjoyed every sentence, every minute and am looking forward to the next which, I believe, is to be called Blue Moon.
Highly recommended.
