About this listen

Brought to you by Puffin.

The first audiobook in the incredible new series from the author of Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles and Heroes of Olympus.

My name is Magnus Chase. I'm orphaned and living rough on the streets of Boston. And things are about to get much worse.

My day started out normally enough. I was sleeping under a bridge when some guy kicked me awake and said, 'They're after you.' Next thing I know, I'm reunited with my obnoxious uncle, who casually informs me that my long-lost father is a Norse god.

Nothing normal about that. And it turns out the gods of Asgard are preparing for war. Apparently, if I can't find the sword my father lost two thousand years ago, there will be doom. Doomsday, to be precise.

A fire giant attacking the city?

Immortal warriors hacking each other to pieces?

Unkillable wolves with glowing eyes?

It's all coming up.

But first I'm going to die. This is the story of how my life goes downhill from there...

Great story, the narrator reads very fast

It's another great story from Rick Riordan with interesting characters, you get to learn a lot about Norse mythology and the storyline is interesting. The only thing that makes this a sometimes difficult listen is that the narrator reads very fast.

Fabulous for fans of adventure and Norse mythology

The Sword of Summer has all the intelligence, heart and humour I've come to associate with Rick Riordan's books but it most definitely has a different vibe than the Greek and Roman - and even the Egyptian - books... which isn't a bad thing!

In the beginning, Magnus is living on the street after the death of his mother some years before and he is oblivious that he is a Norse demigod. Throughout the book, we get to see Magnus become one of the einherjar - immortal warriors of Valhalla - and learn about his family history and the world of the Norse gods all whilst trying to prevent Fenrir wolf from breaking free from his chains, and Surtr from getting his hands on the Sword of Summer, thus kick-starting Ragnarok.

The book is packed full of Norse mythology and I am glad that I listened to the audiobook otherwise I'd never have been able to pronounce the various Norse terms! My Norse mythology isn't as strong as my Roman and Greek but the tales and features of Riordian's world still felt familiar to me and would be an easy way of introducing the Norse Pantheon to kids.

The story was fast-paced with a diverse cast of characters. The book had a core of humour, loyalty, bravery and adventure like all of the author's books, however, I'd be so bold as to say that Hotel Valhalla is even crazier than Camp Half-blood or Camp Jupiter and the einherjar are absolutely bonkers!

All in all, I really liked it! I'd definitely recommend it for anyone who loves a good story filled with adventure and mythology.

Loved it! Gripping storyline and great characters. Not a fan of the narrator but he is still good at telling the story

Great story, poor narration

The story was great like the other books from previous series done by Rick Riordan. The only thing that lets this down is the narrator who genuinely sounds like AI.

Good Book

I would listen to this again as Magnus and the others are brilliantly written characters portrayed well in this audiobook. I love Magnus's narration and the audiobook format brings the characters to life in a way the page can't. Rick Riordan's books translate well to this format.
