Summary
Maigret would have found it difficult to formulate an opinion of him. Intelligent, yes, certainly, and highly so, as far as one could tell from what lay beneath some of his utterances. Yet alongside that, there was a naive, rather childish side to him.
Maigret is savouring a beautiful spring morning in Paris when an aspiring film-maker draws his attention to a much less inspiring scene, one where ever-changing loyalties can have tragic consequences.

A good take, well told
A good story and a good narrator made this a worthwhile listen. The narrator introduced clear inflections, which made it easy to know who was speaking. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Perfect
Simenon's writing is so understated and efficient, he conjures up the world perfectly and never wastes your time! It's really superb.
Gareth Armstrong is a master too. His range (and depth) of voices is superhuman. Can't recommend the reissued series enough.

Wonderful main storyline but almost ludicrous ending.
As I was listening to this I thought it was one of the best Maigret stories but, alas, as so often with Simenon, he just cannot write an ending in keeping with the build-up. It is almost as if he is writing to,a,deadline and running out of time and cobbles together the denouement. As usual, though, the narration by Gareth Armstrong is a virtuoso performance. Mr Armstrong really IS Maigret.

Simenon meets Christie.
This is the first of the Maigret novels that felt like a whodunit to me. It could neither improve nor detract from the fact of Simenon's obvious genius. Whodunit, in the sense of the importance of time, opportunity, motive and precise enactment of the killer. A wonderful spin on an already brilliant story, read most beautifully by a narrator equal to the brilliance of the author.
