About this listen

It is the eve of destruction. Gaul seethes and bucks more than ever in revolt against the Roman invader, with even Caesar's allies beginning to question their loyalty.

A conspiracy of Druids and Kings move the pieces into position in their great game of independence, all led by the powerful exile Vercingetorix. The lands of the Belgae burn in the vengeful aftermath of a winter that saw countless Romans butchered by the Eburone King: Ambiorix.

As Rome similarly begins to show its cracks and the triumvirate of powerful men that have held together the crumbling Republic move ever further apart, so Fronto returns to the army, once more seeking his command under the great general. But Caesar has made a vow to end the life of Ambiorix, and naught will stand in the way of that vow's completion - not Gaul, nor Roman, nor reason itself.

brilliant

suspense will eat at me until next in series, the story is building , war is coming, great writing again, I'm even used to the narrator now who seems to be fully immersed, and in all the bloodshed and intrigue, fronto has the joy of wintering with family, looking forward to spring and his beloved 10th legion, careful what you wish for.

Turney's series had become more and more refined

This is my go-to Roman historical fiction. It's follows the history of the Gallic war s pretty well. Has a nice amount of solid accurate detail. Adequate humour, enough familial reality and lots of action. Pretty darn good stuff.

Another great instalment

The author continues to breathe life and excitement into the story of Caesar’s Gallic Wars. This is a really enjoyable series with well developed characters. The story moves at great pace and is well written enough to transport you into it like an evening at the movies. Great and consistent narration. Highly recommended

good story but those mispronunciations..

I do like this series and, on balance, the narrator.

That said, the mispronunciation of certain words is getting worse: 'demesne', 'sinecure' and 'niche' all spring to mind, although there are others.

Another excellent installment

All the favourite characters are here! Marcus Frontos is leading his singularis through the forest, hunting Rome’s enemies. The question is who is the traitor and will Marcus find him before he, and Caesar, is destroyed? Great writing, enough plot twists to keep a snake happy, amazing action scenes, brilliant in depth historical detail. Love it.
