About this listen

Why do good things happen to bad people? Can we prove whether God exists? What is the difference between right and wrong? Medieval philosophers were centrally concerned with such questions: questions which are as relevant today as a thousand years ago when the likes of Anselm and Aquinas sought to resolve them.

In this fast-paced, enlightening guide, Sharon M Kaye directly introduces listeners to the philosophers’ writings and the criticisms levied against them. Taking us on a tour of medieval philosophy, Kaye reveals the debt it owes to Aristotle and Plato, and showing how medieval thought is still inspiring philosophers and thinkers today.

Editor reviews

Sharon Kaye's Medieval Philosophy is the result of her 10 years of experience teaching a college course on the subject. This audiobook collects a number of different philosophies from the time period between A.D. 400 and A.D. 1400. Kaye argues that many of the ideas that were developed during this time are still a part of our modern-day ideologies. This audiobook serves as a vast and comprehensive survey of medieval thought. Paul English's performance is convincing and thought-provoking. The listener develops a Middle Ages consciousness, where questions of religion and morality abound.

Critic reviews

“Beautifully written and wonderfully accessible. Discussing all the major thinkers and topics of the period, Kaye’s volume does exactly what it should.” (William Irwin, professor of Philosophy, King's College Pennsylvania and editor of The Blackwell Philosophy and Pop Culture Series)
“Simultaneously entices students into and prepares them for the riches of the abundant literature that lies ready for their exploration.” (Martin Tweedale, Professor Emeritus of Medieval Philosophy, University of Alberta)

Easy to understand and interesting.

This audible book is well presented and easy to listen to. The content is fascinating and is a good introduction to medieval philosophy yet also gave me the thirst to learn more about the subject following on from this introduction. Good examples are given throughout to make it easier to understand and the style of writing flows well. I have enjoyed the audible so much they I have now ordered the book to re read.
