About this listen

It's 1978, and Jack Sheffield begins his second year as headmaster of a small village primary school in North Yorkshire. There are three letters on his desk - one makes him smile, one makes him sad, and one is destined to change his life forever. This is from nine-year-old Sebastian, suffering from leukaemia in the local hospital, who writes a heartbreaking letter addressed to "Mister Teacher". Jack tries to help, and so begins a journey through the seasons of Yorkshire life, in which the school is the natural centre of the community.

There's a colourful cast of characters who accompany Jack through the ups and downs of the school year including Vera, the school secretary who worships Margaret Thatcher and whose greatest ambition is to become president of the Women's Institute; Ruby, the 20-stone caretaker who sings like Julie Andrews; and Dorothy, the coffee shop assistant who is desperate to be Wonder Woman. Most of all, there is the lovely Beth Henderson, a teacher from a nearby school, who with her Sister Laura presents Jack with an unexpected dilemma....

Takes me back

I agree with kindle user, these books are charming and I relive my childhood days listening to them, although I left primary school in 1975. Listen to them all and the prequel to them. Well written storybooks for grown ups.

Well told and real escapism. well worth a listen

Well narrated good story I can really imagine that a village like this really existed and that that story is not exaggerated.

Enjoyable book

What a lovely gentle story. It was an absolute pleasure to listen to. I was born in Yorkshire and it’s lovely to hear a Yorkshire narrator, it adds character to the book.

Mister Teacher

A most enjoyable and at times amusing and touching stories within a story. I enjoyed very much listening to the actual authors voice which made it all so much more realistic.

Heart warming!

some people I noticed gave up on the 1st book saying the narration was bland! Jack Sheffield is not an actor but wanted to share his wonderful experiences in his own words and I for one am glad he did! His books just get better and better as does he the more used he gets to telling them. So for the people that gave up on him...what a shame! His stories although sometimes sad are mostly comical (out of the mouth of babes!) They give you that warm fuzzy feeling. I love them and I wish there was more. Thanks for sharing Jack X
