About this listen

The crown of England is the oldest surviving political institution in Europe. Throughout this audiobook Dr David Starkey emphasises the Crown's endless capacity to adapt to circumstances and reshape national policy, whilst he unmasks the personalities and achievements, the defeats and victories, which lie behind the kings and queens of British history. Each of these monarchs has contributed to the religion, geography, laws, language, and government which we live with today. Monarchy demonstrates exactly how these states were arrived at, how these monarchs subtly influenced each other, which battles were won and why, whose whim or failure caused religious tradition to wither or flourish, and which monarchs, through their acumen, strength and single minded determination, came to enforce the laws of England.©2006 David Starkey (P)2007 W F Howes Ltd. Magnificent from start to finish

Magnificent from start to finish, and one of the best audiobooks I have ever listened to. The author effortlessly brings a huge cast of royal protagonists vividly to life and the pace never flags.

Fascinating

I’ve only just started listening to this, however I have listen to and watched David Starkey for years. It is so nice listening to him reading his own book with all of his enthusiasm and knowledge of this subject. What would be nice is for there to be more of his books unabridged on audible, but also him reading them. It is truly wonderful, please can we have some more please.

Totally Respect David Starkey But......

David Starkey is a brilliant historian, I love his TV programmes and other books of his. This though just didn’t pique my interest sufficiently to keep me engaged until the end. I can’t fault his brilliant research and writing and awesome presentation skills. Just not the most interesting subject matter......for me.

a full account of our monarchy through the ages

a wonderful book, albeit odd moments where the detail is just too in-depth to the point I was slightly lost.

Just about enough on everyone

I enjoyed this a lot. It romps along through history highlighting loads of interesting elements of each monarch. Starkey loves to confound and is no exception here as he blows the trumpet for some of our less fondly remembered royals. Nice easy history.

I wish this had been around in my schooldays

A sensible story extremely well told - not just coherent but given colour by the narrator as much as by his writing style. It is so persuasive a view that It encourages me to explore and find alternative perspectives - this how history should be presented.
