Summary

Munich, 1935 - The Bavarian capital is a magnet for young, aristocratic Britons who come to learn German, swim in the lakes and drink beer in the cellars.

What they don't see - or choose to ignore - is the brutal underbelly of the Nazi movement which considers Munich its spiritual home.

When a high-born English girl is murdered, Detective Sebastian Wolff is ordered to solve the crime. Wolff is already walking a tight line between doing his job and falling foul of the political party he abhors. Now Hitler is taking a personal interest in the case.

Followed by the secret police and threatened by his own son, a fervent member of the Hitler Youth, the stakes have never been higher. And when Wolff begins to suspect that the killer might be linked to the highest reaches of the Nazi hierarchy, he fears his task is simply impossible - and that he might become the next victim.

Is Inspector Wolf the new Bertie Gunter?

Rory Clements takes us to Munich and introduces us to Inspector Wolf, Our hero is a non nazi police officer, not only fighting crime but having to negotiate the various competing political factions who are intent on making life difficult for an honest cop.

Munich was the city which saw the birth of the Nazi party, the book is set in 1935 after Hitler came to power and is a murder mystery story, Rory paints a disturbing picture of life for ordinary folk where the Nazis had introduced a climate of fear of imprisonment or worse, for saying the wrong thing, or had political or religious beliefs that were contrary to what was required..
It is all here British aristocracy, occult, murder, love interest for our hero with Himmler, Hitler, and Heydrich all name checked if not involved

It was said that this was a one off book, I hope it is not, the way must be open for a return to what appears to be a very fertile period and set in one of the hotbeds of Nazi support with lots of political infighting

A really good listen

A slowish introduction to the time and characters in Munich in the 1930s but when it gets going the personalities and events keep you gripped. The final denouement is unexpected and the final sentence makes you imagine there may be more outings for the Kripo and Sebastian.

Invokes The Thirties, history perfectly interwoven. Great fun, Seb replaces Tom Wilde very well. Brilliantly read Adam, as usual. Miss Tom !

What an introduction to Sebastian Wolf!

Yet another great story from Rory Clements narrated so well by Adam Sims. The intonations, accents and inflections from Adam make this story come alive. I am eagerly awaiting the next story about Herr Wolf and beautiful Hexi Keep the stories coming Rory, Adam please keep narrating them A really great read

Excellent

A brilliant book that is easy to immerses yourself in. The context of Nazi Germany and the antisemitism , so casual and prolific, is both disturbing and realistic, particularly as we know the subsequent real events. Wolf is an heroic character and easy to warm to. Let’s have more of him please.

A principled, war-weary detective trying to solve a murder in the face of relentless political and personal pressures.

A fascinating insight into the corruption and horror of Hitler’s rise to power, with all the jostling for power of the politically ambitious.
The ending felt a bit flat. Some of the narrator’s voices grated a bit.
