About this listen

A victim of her mother’s Munchausen by proxy and child abuse survivor, Gypsy-Rose Blanchard’s unique and controversial case made headlines across the world.

Now, she’s finally free to start living her life on her terms—and to tell her own story as only she can.

Forced to use a wheelchair in public and endure a lifetime of faux illness, fraud, and exploitation, Gypsy was subjected not only to her mother’s medical, physical, and emotional abuse, but deprived of childhood milestones. Prevented from attending school or socializing, Gypsy’s formative years were defined by pain and isolation.

After serving eight years in prison for the role she played in her mother Dee Dee’s murder, Gypsy is embracing her fresh start—and reminding all of us that it’s never too late.

In this revelatory, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful memoir, Gypsy shares the painful realities she grew up with and the details of her life that only she knows, including:
• The abusive cycle that began with Dee Dee’s abuse by her father
• Gypsy’s fear that continued unnecessary surgery would leave her truly disabled
• How she coped with guilt and accepted responsibility for her mother’s death
• Memories of her final days in prison
• What she learned upon reviewing her own medical records for the first time
• How it felt to finally see her family again as her authentic self

Featuring new facts about Gypsy’s life that she previously kept private, My Time to Stand offers an unprecedented look at the real Gypsy-Rose Blanchard, proudly embarking on her ongoing journey to recovery and self-discovery.

Gypsy reading her own story

Very well written and hits home more being read by Gypsy herself..
The recalling of events and the way it was delivered made it an easy listen but not easy to hear all the stuff she had to endure.

I was instantly hooked

I listened to the whole book in 1 day, it was interesting hearing more about her life and how she felt, we've all heard about her crime, but not so much about what lead her to it and the relationships she had with family and partners over the years. I'd recommend giving this a listen

Not sure I trust her story

There is no fact checking and many of her claims have been proven to be false in the past. I think it is very telling that the beginning authors notes disclaims that this is not a product of facts and rather just her "memories" and they can be whatever she wants them to be. It is a somewhat interesting listen though so I gave it 3 stars.

A remarkable insight to such a unique situation

After listening to this book I didn’t review it as a victims story but more of a tale into the story of a unique mother and daughter with her mom having mental problems and that of gypsy fighting to live a normal life. This book is not only at times difficult to listen to but also inspiring to see how despite everything she learned the most important lesson self love

I actually really liked it!

It was very insightful. No one will ever know the whole truth as everyone has a different truth and we also will never know if somethings a lie or not. But what I can say just for the book’s sake and not considering all the other thousand opinions and views that can be - it was a great memoir.

A Raw & Honest Account

Very moving and leaves you feeling a deep sense of empathetic understanding. At times the book is a very hard read, or hard to listen to. I don't think it could have been any better written, and is quite gripping. Gypsy's personality and humor shines through, especially towards the end of the book. I like how the Chapter names are in French and there are a lot of nods to Gypsy's heritage and Cajun Culture.
